Taking time out for a Meditation Retreat

posted Feb 28, 2018, 8:12 AM by San Ng   [ updated Feb 28, 2018, 8:29 AM ]

Taking an opportunity from a postponed Legal Aid Training in Laos, I had a chance to do a silent meditation retreat up the mountains of central Thailand in October 2017. While not directly work related, I was able to take the opportunity to reflect on my vocational path, and am now recharged in setting its direction for the next decade. Moreover, I was able to explore (when silence was finally over) how Buddhist temples, which are respected and present in almost every village, may be involved with legal empowerment work.  How exciting!

Heading out to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in a few days to present and facilitate a panel on innovation and pro bono lawyering for the 6th Asia Pro Bono Conference. It is exciting to see that technology and innovation is becoming a staple topic at many of these conferences.

2017 Adventures

Whew! What a year it has been. I have worked in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar so far this year- all law and governance related- all in the first 6 months of 2017 and leaving me home only 3 weeks in total up until June. I can't complain, even if my body is starting to. :)

Missing the World Education Summit in Dubai next month

Another upcoming trip for me is planned for February through mid March or so, to Asia! The sad part is that because of the change in their schedule, I will have to miss the World Education Summit in Dubai next month where I was kindly invited to be a keynote speaker. While I have keynote before, this is the first for a eLearning conference, so I am a bit bummed. Hopefully I get to continue to be engaged in teaching, and specifically in virtual teaching!

Promises of 2016

This year promises a lot more travel to Laos and Cambodia, where my current project is being implemented, in partnership primarily with The Asia Foundation and the UNDP. When the design and systems are in place, I'll give more details. In the meantime, you can read more about the overall project over at this UNDP web page

2015 in a nutshell

Another year has passed! I continued to consult this year, while scaling down on my teaching because of my travel schedule. 2015 brought me mainly to Asia - Laos and Cambodia especially- implementing Access to Justice projects in Legal Aid and Mediation. Additionally I also traveled and met with people in Thailand, Singapore and Netherlands, as well as had consulting jobs back here in San Francisco. The most exciting thing is the design of a new innovative project for un-bundling legal services, to help make legal aid more affordable and efficient. Can't wait for 2016!

2014 in a nutshell

Whew, it has been a while since I have updated my status, but my 2014 has been busy with continuing to teach, this time my ICT for Development Class at UC Berkeley's iSchool. At the same time, fun consulting jobs continue to come my way, first in Bangladesh, then Cambodia and now Ethiopia and Kenya, all law and governance related. I am filled with gratitude for all these opportunities that bring so much fun, learning and fulfillment at this point in my life!

Also, my 2 year visit to the School of Information (iSchool) at UC Berkeley has come to an end. At least my official status is, but I am continuing to incubate cool projects and to teach at Cal. What an awesome stint!

We have reached the end of the course, but you can take (or re-take) the class online anytime. All the class readings, videos and Powerpoints are archived here on this website, as well as at our blog at www.barefootlawyers.orgWhile this was first and foremost a face to face course held at the iSchool at UC Berkeley, our hope is to use the reach of the web to enhance learning and collaboration.
